Atcham, St Eata

6 bells, tenor 9-2-25 in G                   Currently ground floor                                SJ541092

Sunday: Check with tower correspondent

Thursday: 1st and 3rd 7.45 - 9.00pm (alternate with Upton Magna)

The treble and fourth were cast by Thomas Mears of Whitechapel in 1829 and the remainder by Abraham Rudhall  I of Gloucester in1709

In 2005 the cracked tenor was welded by Soundweld and the bells tuned and rehung by Taylors on canon-retaining headstocks. This has led to a considerable improvement in the 'go' of the ring. There is a plan to build a ringers' gallery to alleviate the problem of the long draught and the rather risky operation of ringing for weddings when the wedding party passes though the circle on its way to the west door.

There is limited parking on the right outside the church gate and opposite the car park for the Mytton and Mermaid pub. The church stands alongside the River Severn near Thomas Telford's bridge carrying the A5. On the other side of this road can be found Attingham Hall, a National Trust house and garden with an excellent tea room.
